The Cat and the Bow

Hello everyone,

I don´t know why I find cats so fascinating, they are so pretty and majestic, I knew from the beginning I wanted a cat to be the principal in one of our videos. I started thinking story lines and most of them had a cat as a main character.

"The Cat and the Bow" was our first video, I didn't had any kind of tool to draw on the computer and I never had it before, I was a paper kind of person.

We film it during the night, it was pretty unusual for me as I couldn't relax completely. The camera was behind me so I couldn't move forward or I would cover the pictures, and also I couldn't move the paper while drawing. But everything turn out pretty well to be the first one.

I was trying the sleep when the idea for this plot came to my mind. I thought that you can't really tell the sex of a cat, when you see it with a bow on the top of their head you will think is a girl, however if the bow is under the head like a bow tie you will think it is a boy. How we allocate gender to something depending on where a bow is?

I feel we allocate a very specific gender role to the kids from the beginning, blue for baby boys and pink for baby girls, the boys are brute and girls are princesses.

I remember been asked a lot if I was a boy or a girl when I was a kid, I had short hair and always wear pants, nothing too feminin but I was not completely a tom boy. Random people at school used to ask me what I was, that dind't bother me at all, I used to think that makes me special.

My idea was not to give a name to the cat, just name it Cat or Kitten, as this words won't give you any clue on the gender. But Felipe thought naming the cat Naru was a good a idea as for him Naru could work for both sexes and we would also honor our dear cat.

So Naru is a real cat, is our two year old kitten, who inspired the first story of this project.

With love,

Marina
